About the Photos

All photographs featured in the "Roving Camera" pages are taken with digital cameras on travels in my neighborhood and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I started out with an Olympus C2500L camera, with both the telephoto and wide angle extension lenses that give an equivalent of 28mm - 160mm lenses on a 35mm camera. I have recently upgraded to an Olympus E-10 camera. It gives me larger pictures and conveniences like auto bracketing, more f-stops, and histograms for analyzing exposures in the field. The swing-away LCD monitor is really cool. The E-10 handles and operates like a conventional 35mm camera. I recommend it highly to anyone who has $2000 burning a hole in their pocket. I usually operate the cameras in automatic exposure mode, and "bracket" my exposures at different settings to insure proper exposure. I don't use filters, not even my favorite polarizing filter. They don't seem to be necessary with digital. I carry a tripod wherever I go to hold the camera steady. I generally use the built in flash for fill light or a quick solution for low light conditions. Otherwise I use natural light with exposures up to 8 seconds. These cameras have excellent white balance control and I often use the manual settings for good color. For detail and adequate "pixel depth" I shoot the photos large - at least 1800 x 1400 pixels. The photos are edited in Photoshop 6.0, with only minor touch-ups and adjustments to brightness and color. I use the Unsharp Mask filter to sharpen the photos when necessary. These pictures and the entire QuietlyWild web site was assembled by me using Adobe PageMill, GoLive!, and Macromedia Dreamweaver software. I insist I'm more of an engineer than an artist, so web development to me is great fun - it's a bit like whittling. QuietlyWild.com is hosted at Pasty Central in Calumet Michigan. Check out the "Pasty Cam" for more photos of Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula. |
